Undergraduate Tuition & Aid
Undergraduate Cost of Attendance
Tuition rates are set by the Academic Council each spring for the following academic year. The annual cost of attendance is the total amount we estimate it will cost a student to attend MIT for one year. We use this budget to determine financial aid for every student.
Cost of Attendance (Before Aid), 2025–2026
| Expense category | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $64,310 |
| Student life fee | $420 |
| Housing | $13,614 |
| Food | $7,650 |
| Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment | $910 |
| Personal expenses | $2,436 |
| Total | $89,340 |
Note: This budget does not include travel allowances, which are assessed based on personal address.
Financial Aid
The Institute’s generous financial aid program ensures that an MIT education is affordable for the most talented students in the world regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. MIT provides every undergraduate with sufficient financial aid to meet the difference (full need) between the MIT “sticker price” (the cost of attendance) and what their family can afford to pay (their demonstrated financial need). This is the only kind of aid awarded at MIT (there is no merit aid because all of our students would qualify), and there is no expectation of loans (though a small number of students choose to take them).
In the 2024–2025 academic year, the Institute allocated $167.3 million from the endowment toward MIT Scholarships, which are grants distributed on the basis of financial need that do not need to be repaid. Since fall 2025, students with family income under $200,000 typically attend MIT tuition-free, and families whose total income is less than $100,000 are typically not expected to contribute anything toward the cost of attending MIT.
